              3. FEATURED PROGRAM:
                Clear Speech –For Accent-Reduction

CLEAR SPEECH is a program for accent reduction.

                WHO IT CAN HELP

When you speak English: Do people ask you to repeat yourself? Are you shy or nervous starting a conversation? Does your accent negatively affect the way people regard you? Have you 'forgotten' your English lessons because you don't practice enough? Are you intimidated from going places because of the way you speak?

If you answered 'yes' to any of these, then Clear Speech Works is for you. Numerous studies reveal that people with accents are not taken as seriously as native speakers. There is nothing wrong with having an accent except when it hinders your ability to communicate effectively.

                HOW IT WORKS

Personalized lesson plans are developed based on your native language. Simply choose your native language from the 'Lessons For' list and Clear Speech Works will tell you which of the 24 lessons are important for you.

                STUDIES DEMONSTRATE EFFECTIVENESS

Blackmer and Ferrier's research shows that speakers of your native language generally have trouble with certain sounds when speaking English. The lessons that address those sounds will be recommended. For example, French speakers typically find the H sound challenging. Thus, Lesson 5 is among the suggested lessons for French speakers. Chinese speakers have no trouble with H, but do have trouble distinguishing between the l and r sounds. So, Lesson 13 is included in Chinese speakers' lesson plan.

                Tip For Better Care

"Put a picture up of the "pre-stroke" survivor"

                Jill (Arizona) writes:

Just for the record..I got the idea of putting up pictures of Mom, pre-stroke, from a TV movie about a father who burned his son in his bed. The poor boy (true story) was in the hospital TOTALLY covered with bandages. The nurses first saw him in the bandaged state. He looked like a mummy....but he was in there, listening to everything. The mother came in one day and heard the nurses talking in front of him, as if he weren’t there, and she realized he was just a pile of bandages to them. So...she brought in a picture, yelled and screamed, and "informed" them that inside those bandages was her wonderful boy.

I know I’ve been guilty of the same thing...seeing someone who was disabled and classifying them as a lesser person, because of a handicap, rather than trying to see the person they really are, or really were. It’s one of those things where until you are in the situation, you probably have no way of knowing differently. I am sure thankful when nurses and doctors talk directly to Mom, rather than to me...and treat her respectfully. It makes all the difference in the world.

              3. HUMOR
                Definition of ‘HMO’Part ii

              Q. What should I do if I get sick while traveling?

              A. Try sitting in a different part of the bus.

              Q. No, I mean what if I'm away from home and I get sick?

              A. You really shouldn't do that. You'll have a hard time seeing

your primary care physician. It's best to wait until you return,

              and then get sick.

              Q. I think I need to see a specialist, but my doctor insists he can

handle my problem. Can a general practitioner really perform a

heart transplant right in his office?

              A. Hard to say, but considering that all you're risking is the $10

co-payment, there's no harm giving him a shot at it.

              Q. What accounts for the largest portion of health care costs?

              A. Doctors trying to recoup their investment losses.

              Q. Will health care be any different in the next century?

              A. No, but if you call right now, you might get an appointment

              by then.
