LANGUAGE SKILLS DECLINE AFTER THERAPY ENDS

Stroke recovery takes a lot of therapy. Unfortunately, insurance companies are providing less and less therapy coverage, leaving many patients with no option but to sit at home and watch T.V. Clinical studies* show that, without some therapy practice, patients' language-skills decline.

*Clinical study data is available on the web at:

      HOME THERAPY CAN HELP

"Between the Speech therapists and the Bungalow Software, my husband John is doing so well that he is able to communicate his wants and needs by speech

The speech therapists said that Bungalow's therapy software has helped John progress to this level of speech."

              -Marie Ritchie, caregiver, and wife

  1. RECOVERY RESOURCE
Painless Electrical Stimulus Helps Restore Hand Movement For Stroke Patients

  2. GAINESVILLE, Fla.---Leslie McClellan, 68, could barely hold an empty soft drink can with his left hand years after a stroke affected his left side. Forget about picking up a piece of paper or grasping a pencil - or, worse yet, preparing meals.

Now he can anchor a piece of steak with a fork to cut it and once again clutch an apple.

The turnabout came after McClellan participated in a University of Florida study that used a slight electrical current to painlessly stimulate the muscles of his arm. Scientists say this could revolutionize the way patients are treated in the months and years after a stroke, a leading cause of motor disability.

  1. HUMOR AND INSPIRATION

This is a thoughtful, insightful poem my father-in-law sent my wife.

      LISTEN

When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving advice you have not done what I asked.

When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn't feel that way -

you are trampling on my feelings.

When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem, you have failed me, strange as that may seem.

Listen! All I ask was that you listen, not to talk or do- just hear me.

And I can do for myself; I'm not helpless, maybe discouraged and faltering, but not helpless.

When you do something for me that I can and need to do for myself, you add to my fear and weakness.

But, when you accept as a simple fact that I do feel what I feel, no mater how irrational, then I can quit trying to convince you and get about the business of understanding what's behind this irrational feeling.

And when that's clear, the answers are obvious and I don't need advice. Irrational feelings make sense when we understand what's behind them.

Perhaps that's why prayer helps, sometimes, for some people because God is mute, and he doesn't give advice or try to fix things. He just listens and lets you work it out for yourself.

So, please listen and just hear me. And if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn, and I'll listen to you.
